2001

Even though the "Ramsay" banner put me off, i couldn't put off watching it, given my weakness to MurderMysteries and the constant bombardment of Advt in almost all the cable channels.

There is hardly any sembelance of a plot. All the characters keep getting bumped off one by one from reel one with 2001 Mark being left near their corpse by the Killer. JackieShroff and Rajat (a new actor) are the police Officers (there is hardly a scene with them in the uniforms) who try to track the killer. Even a kid could have made out who was the Killer before the interval itself. That is really pathetic!

Technically , it is POOR. Songs are HORRIBLE. Dimple and Tabu are WASTED. Jackie shroff seems totally Disintrested in the proceedings. SureshOberoi provides a few light moments with his Hyderabadi lingo! I hope RajSippy (director) takes permanent retirement after this disaster. What a fall for a director who started off with a gripping "Inkaar".!

If u want to "torture" any of ur friends, pls take them to this movie, tie them to the seat and flee from the scene :-).. cheers raj

Titanic and Aflatoon

Both are very good movies -one cost $200m and the other maybe $2m . The sign of a good film- they keep you engrossed for three hours each.

Those who think Bollywood ones are unrealistic should see the opening scene of Titanic- a buxom pretty young rich redhead wants to commit suicide because she cant face the thought of being idle rich and going to endless parties ! She really is a fine actress. Hollywood movies are starting to become a bit more interesting with a little bit of music , a little emotion , a good albeit brief dance sequence -an Irish jig - and of course spectacular special effects.

They even built a ship as big as the Titanic for the movie ! but photgraphy is not that good as it doesnt give one the idea of the sheer scale of the ship . One wonders why they didnt break up the floor boards or toss beds overboard which would have made good rafts. Most people in the cold water are dead withing twenty minutes as the heat leaks out into the cold water and that is what killed most of them.

The top grossing films tend to be science fact/fiction - Return of Jedi/ Jurrasic Park/Titanic /ET etc. and looking at Hey Ha Ho , I must say Indians are becoming masters in computer animation and one would love to see some films with an educational bases . Say a journey to the moon and back showing thousands of pictures of our planet close up from space - it will be a big hit -as was Microcosmos the French one on insects. Lets see what Captian Vyom - the Indian version of star trek does on TV.

Titanic deservedly is going to become the biggest hit of all time- I like the 3 hour length which allows characters to be built up and the computer graphics at the start showing how the ship was hit was fantastic.

As for Aflatoon - the dance - Yeh khabar chapwa do Akhbar mein - alone is worth the price of the ticket - and Urmilla models hundreds of dresses. Shazia Malik makes a beautiful moll. Its worth taking to crime just for one like her ! Akshaye is good as usual - the triple karate kick is impressive . Photography is very good. One thing that Bollywood does very well and Hollywood lacks is the comedy sidekick who plays the fool - in Aflatoon there is the house servant with a very short memory who wont even let the master back in ! Titanic is a must see and Aflatoon a good time pass ..mo

Sat Rang ke Sapne

This movie is worth a dekho for its visual splendour, brilliant photography, art direction and colourful costumes of the artistes. Remake of a popular Malayalam movie by director PriyaDarshan, the Hindi version suffers a few lacunae in the plot, but the technical aspects of the movie overcomes that.

The movie revolves around ArvindSwamy, Anupam Kher and Juhi in a triangular plot. AnupamKher and Arvind swamy share a bosom Master-servant relationship. Things turn sour , when both of them fall for Juhi, without either of them knowing it. How things get resolved, forms the climax of the movie. ArunaIrani is the fourth angle in this plot.

Anupam Kher does a great job in enacting a role which has various shades - Master, Lover, Brother, Villain , Comedian. - in it. Juhi Chawla fits her part of a pretty damsel, caught between the man she loves and a older man who is bent upon getting her. Here is one more decent performance from her. ArvindSwamy seems to be a bit of letdown. His dubbing was not perfect and he is unable to shake of his "urbane" mannerisms. This role needed somebody who could be a pucca rustic. Anyway, he was OK and his effort was apparent. SatishShah does a comic Cameo. Farida Jalal , Mink and ArunaIrani lend good support. Watch out for a creepy performance by Namdeo as a jealous servant , who incites AnupamKher against ArvindS.

The desert is picturised very beautifully. All the songs jell well with the situation. Songs are "un"-NadeemShravan like :-)

Some "whining" : how come bullock-carts are used in deserts?? And i have never heard of "Kannada Speaking Tribes" in Rajasthan! Whatever happens to Anumpam Kher's Kasam?? And what about Mukesh Rishi, who is shown for one shot as a beastly brother-in-law of juhi?

Overall, this is one of the better movies in the scene today. ..cheers raj

But there it stops. Where Muthu was great 'fun', I found Saat rang ke sapne to be very drab. I choose the word "drab" very specifically, because color-wise, you can call it anything but drab... Superb bright colors throughout the movie. Wonderful photography, great color schemes and nice costumes too. But what a waste of all that color, making such a dull and uninteresting movie.

It seems the characters are forever ready to launch into long explanatory monologues at the drop of a pagaDii!! Even Juhi is made to remain unnaturally dull and drooping. The scenes with the hero-heroine fighting with each other are neither funny nor do they help in letting you identify with the characters.

Priyadarsan is quite good technically, but he lacks "bigtime" in giving his movies any emotional soul. Viraasat's soul comes from Kamal's story but even there Priyan should have made AnilK *react* instead of parrot his lines and emotions out in almost every important scene. In Saat Rang ke Sapne, in an important scene between FaridaJ and ArvindS, he shoots them from above. Beautiful visual of them standing in the desert, but it seems to detach the audience from the emotions of the scene.

So, see the movie only on the big screen, is my reco. At least, you can enjoy the colors and the photog. Also, watch out for Farah Khan's choreography of the song where all the folks are teasing AnupamK about his marriage. Superbly done!! Another nice point about the movie was that except for the one case where they land up among tribals who speak a different tongue (as Raj commented), the story is not stretched by including far-fetched ideas, even ones which are considered normal in Hindi Film. Eg - I didn't see a 'gun' in anybody's hand, the hero isn't necessarily a superhero able to leap tall buildings in one bound, the clothes are kept realistic without the poverty-stricken hero suddenly appearing in the latest Air Jordans, and lastly the villain doesn't suffer a gruesome death!!

Two other songs - 'aati hai to chal' and 'jhooT bol na' are fair. Watch out for KSanu clone, Babul Supriyo in the songs tho'. :) He seems to have a slightly weaker voice than KSanu but with all the nasal twang and flatness.

:( Later, Ikram.

Indian Cartoons

Zee has an educational program called Zee Zone and it often shows Indian cartoons. Its amazing how creative and well done they are - each story lasts about 15 minutes , the graphics are brilliant , the story gripping , the comedy great , the music and sounds out of this world. An excellent example was Tupa Tup - a story of a dhobi who defeats an evil emperor .
Like Bollywood movies once you have seen one you become addicted. Highly recommended.

Dhaal

Some really excellent songs beautifully choreographed - Macarena , Goosa woosa chod , Hasil maza and The night is young -touch me . Macarena had girls in short skirts and was the reason probably why the movie was held up for a year -the producers should get overseas clearance first so that American and European audiences can get to see them without delay .

A rich man's son keeps falling in love with prostitutes and keeps bringing them home to get his father's approval for marriage.- otherwise it is another gangster movie with Vinod Khana , Gautami , Sunil Shetty and a new actress whose name I forget. She is quite good looking.

This movie has been brought straight out on video and Eros is to be congratulated ( they must be reading Ramli ! ) -the picture quality was perfect ! More of this and video rentals and sales will go through the roof . The sound in the second mysteriously went down 20 decibels but one cant have everything.

The main reason I think why it didnt click at the box office was that the women were not wearing Indian dresses . Even the poorest village belle wears milion dollar dresses in Bollywood movies and any producer who breaks this unwritten rule risks the movie flopping...Mo
