Three Kings

Picture quality -awful This is the second Hollywood movie I have seen at this complex -after Phantom Menace which has such terrible resolution . A gorra friend I took to see the Indian Kaho na pyaar hai was amazed at how colorful , vibrant and alive the picture ( the big sailing ship scenes are stunning ) seemed compared to Hollywood movies which I suppose are now being shot in the new fangled poor resolution video instead of 35 and 70mm print . Maybe Hollywood pays too much to the actors and doesnt have enough money left over for good film print and its the opposite for Bollywood , but I hope the latter never abandons film . Digital video sucks..

The first 20 mins were a bore .One kept looking for that first song and dance but it never came . Now it can be erotic and a shock when a woman uses the f word - Pooja Batra does it , the only time I have ever heard it in an Indian movie in Virasat but it is understandable because she has just been away for a week and her steady boyfriend gets married to a village girl ! , but in this movie the American female reporter in Iraq after the war , does it about ten times every 2 minutes and its just plain silly and off putting .

I have travelled extensively in America and have many American friends and none of them sprinkle four letter words in every sentence . As in Bollywood movies they rely on wit and intelligence to insult ( eg Cheers) unlike Sunil and Madurai and Faddy , and that is why the dialog in American movies is so poor . They are meant for teenage underachievers from the inner cities and witty dialog would make the movies flop , hence the shortcut to f .. words.

There is not the backroung veena or whatever they play in Indian movies to get the emotions going at sad bits so Hollywood movies tend to be rather flat even when showing a relative killed in front of a child .

One bit I liked were when they showed what would happen if a bullet pierced the gallbladder -all the green bile would come out and cover the guts or when the chest cavity gets punctured and sepsis would set in , these kind of educational bits are great . In fact I am thinking of inventing new educational video games - say a lecture with pictures of say the gene and the cell where the kids would learn a topic and get marks as they went along and the minute they got one answer wrong they would have to go back to the beginning ..Mo

I guess you totally missed the point of Three Kings. The movie is based during the Gulf war so the director decided to give the movie a grainy and washed out look to make it feel more gritty. Kinda like Saving Private Ryan was filmed. I don't think it would have been appropriate for the movie to look colorful.

"The first 20 mins were a bore .One kept looking for that first song and dance but it never came ."
Uh...this is a Hollywood movie. When was the last time you saw a song in a live action Hollywood movie? Again this is a war movie, I don't think a song would have fit. The first 20 min were used to setup the plot and introduce the characters. It serves a purpose, I don't think that is boring.

About the F-word--I've been living in the US for the last ten years. I went to Elementary and High School here (in a middle to high class neighborhood). I think that the F-word was under used if you ask me, people use it a lot more than that. Again the movie was meant to be realistic, its not based in a fantasy world like most Indian movies are (Pardes, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Taal).

"There is not the backroung veena or whatever they play in Indian movies to get the emotions going at sad bits so Hollywood movies tend to be rather flat even when showing a relative killed in front of a child ."
Doesn't that make Hollywood movies less manipulative and insulting to the audience? Those musical cues spoon feed the audience and tells them what and how to think. It is very pretentious. But in Three Kings, everything is left to the audience. We are actually forced to think (see Schindler's List, Age Of Innocence, even the Hindi movie Satya).

I suggest you read Roger Ebert's review of Three Kings, it is very perceptive. He thinks its one of the best movies of '99, I would have to agree (along with Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, and American Beauty).

It appears we've intercepted a transmission to the mothership. Actually, the idea of a musical version of Three Kings intrigues..Reagan

Mela

Should one go to see a movie which has been given 0 out of 10 by a reviewer (indolink.com) ? If its a Bollywood movie then you must as even the very worst one has a few good songs and dances which make it worthwhile . Mela I found to be quite enjoyable , the photography is excellent , the stunts great - poor things they even tumble down bare mountainsides when really one would expect every bone to be broken .

Twinkle Khanna may not have had a hit so far but she has done this movie really well with a great range of expressions on her face . The nautanki dance is very good and there is another one near the end with a bit of western classical music . She wears one red blouse with what must be hundreds of mirrored beads which must have taken weeks to make .I liked the answer of her would be husband she asks to help avenge deaths in her family - 'forget all this revenge business he says -life is for mauj and masti - fun and frolicking . What really stirs the emotions is when a woman has been driven beyond endurance by atrocities take the roop of Kali or Durga and the background religious incantation .

Amir Khan is going to get another fatwa for going into a Shiva mandir . I dont know the name of the supporting actor but he could be another hero soon with his good looks .

There is one crudity at the beginning with Johnny Lever drinking what he thinks is beer which should have been cemnsored out and which the distributors would be wise to do now if they want more people to see the movie . Also the violence is cartoon violence and it should be given a universal rating so that kids can come and see it .

I would propose a new system of rating .Out of 10 max . this movie

Bulandi

An enjoyable movie in a rural setting - quite a change from the city slickers of Phir dil hai Hindustani . It hasnt been a hit because of miscasting -meaningless double role . Amitabh or Amrish Puri would have been ideal as the eldest brother , instead of making Anil Kapoor play both roles . We know that all these are good actors so making them play double roles to show off their acting skills eg in Sorryanvansham too is plain silly . It makes the sad moments less believable .

Raveena seems to have lost too much weight . Child bearing hips are a turn on but not slim boyish ones . She does however wear fabulous Indian sarees and dresses .

The fights in this movie are just incredible -split second choreography of village stick fights . That is one reason why these movies are so popular even in African villages eg Dara Singh ones even when a black person comes off worst. !

There is one very good Punjabi song 'Teri meri ik jindadi' which half way turns into a Hindi hangama - totally insane editing . I missed the first 45 mins but even so found the movie to be very good . When the village guy oppresses the newly wed city woman who has come into the village and says 'If you are born a woman then learn to live as a (docile) woman' - he realises his mistake at once when he gets slapped hard !

One is ashamed to laugh at certain moments - when the villain puts the pretty girl over his shoulder and carries her off to have his evil way with her and she protests , he says 'apna radio bandh kar' - but then its only a movie . Paresh Rawal as the suffering son of a lecherous father is great and his father is even better ! Must see .

Pukar

I stopped a couple of beautiful Pakistani girls as they were coming out of the previous show ( one could tell from the head coverings ) and asked them what the movie was like and they told me it was rubbish and not to bother going in , but I had noticed that they had spent three hours and so bought the tickets anyway .

Its true , there are a couple of unnecessary anti Pakistani comments in the first twenty minutes - on nuclear weapons and stuff like that but after that its just like any other adventure yarn.

Lata Mangeshkar has a live appearance and sings very well but the music by AR Rehman . I have three words for it -dont like it , Where is the tabla ? the sarangi ? the veena ? the sitar - is this 'Indian music' -no . And the first half is full of Madhuri and Narmada wearing western dresses awful - but of course Madhuri makes up for it by dancing in a saree on an Alaskan Glacier ! She must have been freezing .

That's one good thing about Bollywood movies -this taking us to exotic locales when they dont have to . Loved the green ice ? why are Alaskan glaciers green and Antarctic white ? is it the plankton ? , and she does dance precariously close to the deep fissure which can go hundreds of feet deep but they could have given a better idea of the scale of these glaciers by putting human figures next to them. These scenes of shifting ice floes made me think of the moon of Jupiter -Europa which has oceans 60 miles deep and very exotic yet to be discovered creatures in it .

Danny as the villain is great , he must have been in Bollywood movies for 40 years and has an iron tight body unless its a double . I enjoy the stunts more in Bollywood than Hollywood movies - I think because they tend to film them from closer . Kidnapping a man by breaking a window while the other car is still travelling and pulling him out with one hand while driving the car with the other has never been done by Hollywood but they probably will copy it soon . Another I liked is the burning helicopter chasing a man down a hill .

It may not be a hit because it doesnt have young stars but I ejoyed it and so did my friends who were with me but please bring Anu Malik back.. Mo

Phir Dil Bi Hai Hindustani

I'll give you my opinion, not a review - too lazy for that. IMO, PBDHH is a very good movie - It has a bit of everything - satire, comedy, romance, action, and patriotism. Probably its main flaw is that it trys to give you too much of everything - I would have prefered it if they focused on the satire, comedy, and romance.

This was Dreamz Unlimited's (founded by Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Aziz Mirza) first production and I think they've done a good job. If you don't already know, the movie is about two rival journalists (SRK and Juhi) who get intangled in the web of rival politicians and come together despite their rivalry to help a common man who has been falsely accused of starting a city-wide riot. In the midst of this, there is a love story, a satire on the media, and a patriotic ending.

Technically, the movie is superb - Santosh Sivan's cinematography is amazing, the art direction is really good, as are the special effects. SRK gives his now routine performence, but Juhi steals the show. She acts so well and looks amazing. Her flair for comedy is present - I don't think anyone, except maybe Kajol, could have done this role as well as she did.

Aziz Mirza handles the various themes of the film very well, but again, I think he should have focused more on one aspect, because sometimes the product is a little confused. Still, the movie is definitely worth seeing in the theatre. I give it an 8.8/10.. Dez

Kaho na pyar hai

Highly enjoyable movie with lots of beautiful scenery of New Zealand ( as in Daud) and Thailand . I like the clever way they left a lot of things up in the air at the end to stop smart asses saying they knew the story all along .

The photography is extraordinary - just look at the hero on the mast of the huge sailing ship - really gives an idea of the scale , and the hot air baloon . They should let the camera linger a lot longer on these scenes as they are so different from what one sees normally .

The music is excellent and choreography by Farah Khan superb . There are other nice touches of beauty that only Bollywood can provide in its songs and dances eg the necklace made of shells . A lot more I may have missed and so like all Bollywood movies one must see them at least twice on the big screen .

Sensational debut by Hrithek Roshan and the dispute about whether these are Hindi or Urdu movies should end when you hear which language he is trying to learn and gets the words wrong all the time . Fine performance by Amisha Patel as well -is she really a Gujarati?

All these girls in hot pants on the ship dont do anything for anyone until one puts on a grass skirt or a few shiny mirrors on them . Western fashion dresses simply cant compete with pagan ones .

Bollywood can rightly be proud that at the beginning of the 3rd millenium it is producing the most entertaining movies on the planet .

More scenes from exotic locations should be shown - maybe Cambodia and Angkor or Bali or Vitenam or Japan . I liked the way they didnt have a single smoking scene. There was product placement of Nokia mobile phones and Coke and why not ? These movies are seen by over 1b people and its the most cost effective way to advertise and the makers can afford big budget ones .

The producer of this movie was shot and nearly killed as it is the biggest superhit this year and the mafia wanted its cut .

A must see on the big screen and a must have on the DVD with hopefuly subtitles of the songs and in many languages and mastered by Superdigital or DEI which will make the producers many times what they can collect at the box office .

KahoNaPyarHai

RakeshRoshan, one of the better directors around the Bollywood scene, comes up with a good entertainer of the masala variety with KahoNaPyarHai, his latest "K" movie (all his movie titles start with the letter K).

Three things work in it's favour: Hrithik Roshan's terrific debut performance ; songs and it's picturisation; the neat splitting of the plot into two parts which keeps the audience intrested in the 3 hour proceedings. The movie starts off as a love story. Rich girl(Anisha) falls in love with a poor struggling singer (Hrithik-Number1). The standard fare of wooing follows : chain of coincidental meetings, couple of good songs, bunch of fawning girls who oooh ahh over Hrithik (a smart bit of PR for the debut actor !), a cruise tour which ends up with Anisha and Hrithik getting marooned in an island (a stunning locale in Thailand) such that the director can sneak in one more song and vows of eternal pyar between the couple.

Just in time before Economics pops up as the spoilsport with the bad daddy of the rich girl (anupamkher) refusing to give his daughter to the poor guy who goes around in a bicycle. Just as you begin to Yawn over the prospect of being conned into.one more bollywood poor-rich love story, the plot switches into a suspense gear all of a sudden. Exit Hrithik Number1 leaving the potential love story in a limbo, for good.

Action shifts to locations in Newzealand, where Anisha is sent for recuperating and it's time for HrithikNumber 2 to enter the scene. That gives us the audience something to chew about and as we watch we see the bad guys (Daliptahil&Co) too are left guessing about the identity of the new kid on the block. If you remember RakeshR's previous movies "KhoonBariMang",, "KaranArjun", "KishenKanyha",, then you will realise he is upto something similar here.

HrithikRoshan makes a impressive debut. One would think that this lad is a veteran , looking at the confidence with which he potrays his role here . Anisha patel does a decent job , especially in the second half of the movie. But, she is totally overshadowed by Hrithik

. All the songs are choreographed well,, of special note are the first two. Photography is fabulous. Overall, a decent entertainer.-- Raj

East is East

A superb English movie about a Pakistani family in England which every Indian should see ! It is of course a bit of caricature of how Muslims and Pakistanis are viewed by the Brits and makes fun of everything sacred to Muslims - circumcision , fear of gays , arranged marriages ,not eating pork , dress - like the excellent Goodness Gracious series and its really surprising that the Mullahs have not unleashed millions of fatwas !

Quite funny are the prejudices of the head of this household during the 71 war as his comments against 'Bastard Indians ' and ' Kameene ( mean ) Indira '. Surprisngly there was house full in mid week and I think thats because its really at heart not an English but a Bollywood movie - intense family emotional drama , even two great songs from Pakeeza and Chaudvin ka Chand and excerpts from two movies and the audience loved it and clapped at the end .

An absolute must see , although Pakistanis and Muslims might be offended and its sure to be banned in every Muslim country it actually humanizes them and will make Salford and Bradford aka Bradistan a great tourist attraction in Britain .

It has some wickedly funny dialog like 'One of her dad's bollocks wil drop off if he finds she is going out with a Pakistani !' . a lot of four letter words but strangely enough one doesnt mind them in this movie .

Another Bollywood feature is the small child ( a kind of Johnny Lever ) who is always getting cuffed round the ear by everyone.. The movie is very clever in the way it makes us confront our fears of other humans with different cultures by making us laugh with them and towards the end there were groans by the 99% white audience at some of the anti Pakistani remarks made by the family themselves .

Hopefully it will be shown in Islamic countries with maybe one or two small cuts -maybe the remark by the long suffering English wife but it would be interesting for those of the Muslim faith to go in and see how many minutes of this movie would be permitted uncut - I suspect less than half an hour .Also one would like to make the point that it is ot a Hindoo plot ! The writer of the movie Ayub Khan-Din is a Muslim Pakistani .

I liked the perfomance of the Pakistani soccer playing rough and tumble girl Meena . As you say its a clever complex film . She does one excellent Bollywood dance to the Pakeeza music I think . It is deeply offensive I agree but in a funny sort of way . I hope Gen Mush lets it be shown uncut in Pakistan . If Pakistanis can laugh at themselves it will enhance their image tremendously in the world.

There are more reviews of this movie on www.virgin.net but dont read them until after you have seen it as I find that reviews which tell the whole story spoil the movie experience completely . Its an 'inside job' as the writer obviously has deep personal knowledge of British Pakistani culture and what would offend .

Another typical Bollywood thing which was probably a new feature for white audiences was the instant emotional tug -for eg when the English mother starts crying about her daughter trapped in Pakistan there wasnt a dry eye in the theatre..Mo

This is an absolutely abysmal film that is offensive to every Asian, though particularly towards Pakistanis and Muslims. The comparison to 'Goodness Gracious Me' is not correct - the difference is that 'Goodness...' satirises and generally pokes fun at Asian traditions in a genuinely funny way and invites the audience to laugh WITH the characters at some of the absurdities of its targets.

'East...', on the other hand, pokes fun AT the whole notion of being anything other than English. The film does not show Asian (Muslim?) identities to have any redeeming features WHATSOEVER. Did you completely lose sense of all your faculties when you were watching this? The audience I watched it with (almost exclusively white) did not laugh very much and presumably found it just as offensive as myself.

I know this just a film but it is just about the most racist thing I've seen in a long time (even though the writer is Asian, I think). Apart from that, it's not even very funny - most of its jokes already having been done on 'Goodness...'.

I saw the same film as you. Agreed, the performances were excellent all round and Om Puri in particular endowed the main character with a degree of complexity that the writing originally hadn't envisaged simply through Om Puri's superb acting abilities. That doesn't, however, change the fact that the film does not depict one single positive aspect of being Asian or Muslim (at least I can't remember any). I therefore highly disagree with your view that the film was directed '...with compassion...of the Pakistani culture..' I don't recall any balance in the film.

And no, I didn't object to the 'racist' comments made by Mr Puri or any other character - I objected to the overall racist tone of the film (and I am quite capable of 'getting it' - I went to see the film without any pre-conceived notions, WANTING to enjoy the film).

I know many people who found the film funny and many people who didn't - and each to their own. Thanks for your comments, anyway..Mashuk

Mashuk, I don't know if I saw the same film that you describe above, but the 'east is east' I saw in Dublin last November is easily one of the best films I saw last year.

I was amazed to see an Irish man direct a movie of such compassion and understanding of the Pakistan culture. I will not be surprised to see this movie win a bunch of British and European awards.

All performances are fantastic, especially Mr. Puri. If you object to some of the racist comments made by Mr. Puri in the film, then you just didn't get it. Those went a long way in defining the character. Rarely have I seen a movie based on Indian/Pakistani culture that is so complex on various levels and presented with wit and simplicity.

This is one of the best films of last year and I highly recommend it. Of course it has not opened in the US yet but it will soon, I hope. Cheers, Anil

It isn't even a proper Bollywood film! But it is such a good film I can understand your obsession. I saw East is East with two Pakistani friends. I was embarassed about the way it portrayed Islam and things Om Puri's character says about Indians, but my friends had no trouble with the film.

Sohail told me he thought that the family's problems were caused more by cultural difference than religion so Islam had not really been shown in a bad light. I thought it seemed to be true to life and very touching. It is also the funniest film I saw in 1999. I went into the cinema wishing I was going to see a masala film instead, but came out very happy with what I had seen because the film has everything in it that should be there (music, drama, action, storyline, humour, and weddings). Do see the film, but be aware that some people could find it offensive!..Adrian
