Haseena Maan Jayegi

Govinda, Sanjay , Karishma, Pooja Batra,Kader Khan ,Paresh Rawal.

If you didnt like Bade Miya Chote Miyan and Biwi No.1 then you wont like this one . Its even more mad cap than the others . Like all comedies you really only begin to enjoy it the second time .

Music .songs and choregraphy are excellent . The Western dresses the two girls wear in the first half are the latest fashion and very fetching - a first for Indian cinema where usually they dont get that bit right .

Paresh Rawal almost steals the show as the Nepali security guard . The man is a genius at acting . Dialog is good 'teri aukat cycle ki nahin hai , tu gadi kaese chalata hai?' . 'Sar pe itne jute maroonga ke saat pushe tak ganje paida honge' I will hit your head so hard with my shoe that for seven generations your family will give birth only to baldies '.

Background scenery is beautiful. This movie has been a big hit in India -maybe because it has been produced by Bal Thackeray's daughter in law and the Bombayites are too scared not to go and see it !.

Seeing this movie a second time one is impressed just how good Bollywood currently are , three hours of sheer entertainment with not a single moment one wants to miss the action .

Govinda is one of the top actors of all time - Coolie no.1 as the bus coolie and now as Chacha in this one -wow! And he is a thinking actor too , not just one who follows what the director tells him . His characters are ones he has observed in real life as he outlined in a recent BPL interview and like all the other stars of course his English is far better than his Hindi but he makes an effort to speak some Hindi in interviews ,

Karisma has never looked as sexy . Pooja Batra is very good too and I quite like her voice . In this movie it is not dubbed as it was in the second half of Virasat . There is another gorgeous creature -the one Shakti Kapoor tries to take into the hotel room -she also danced the Lucky Kabootar song in Daag -the fire -anybody know her name and tel no. ? The costumes , the settings , furniture , music , songs , lyrics all top class -what pleasure these movies give us ..Mo

Khoraam

An average fare is heightened to an entertaining watch by the performances of Nanapatekar and Amitabh.

MehulKumar had done this previously in two of his earlier movies , Tirangaa and Krantiveer, riding successfully on the performances and chemistry between the lead stars.

Much has been talked about the plot during recent months, in aftermath of the Kargil War. But, don't get fooled by it. This is just another "Treacherous Minister hand-in-glove with Terrorists across the border Vs Brave Army major" yarn. What redeems it is, that, not much time or reels are wasted on guns, gore , evil politicians, conspiring terrorists, long winding dialogues about patriotism, duty to nation etc etc. On the contrary, the action is mostly focussed on the Two main leads - Nanap and Amitabh trying to unmask and outwit each other in disguise.

Amitabh plays the role of a Army major who is presumed to be Dead, during his failed attempt to assasinate a Minister. But, he actually survives the accident and dons the identity of a UP Bhaiyya and renews his attempts on the Minister. NanaPatekar is another Army commando who is assigned the task of confirming and exposing the actual identity of Amitabh. NanaP dons the role of a Journalist and tries to get closer to Amitabh.

What follows is funfare, with both characters trying to hiding their actual identities. Amitabh is natural and Seasoned in his "UP bhaaya" role, Slang, paan, gestures all intact and perfect as ever; his other role of a venegful and motivated Army general is also played with conviction. But, NanaPatekar is the scene stealer. Most of his role in the movie is comedy-oriented and he does a very good job of it. There's also a song of him opposite Tabu which i think was picturised Imaginatively.

With these two, the supporting cast are mere spectators. Tabu manages to make an impression, in the little footage she gets.

Nothing much to write about the musical score, though two songs, "paagal" and the "Hum hai" were fun to watch. Technical credits are average. Overall, it's an entertaining movie..cheers raj

Taal on Imax in Indianapolis

Dear Netters,

Here is a totally unbiased report.

It is my pleasure to let all of you know that the world's much awaited release of TAAL on the gigantic IMAX screen was a huge successs. Friends, this is an honor for me and my partner Jay Patel to be a part of this. Surely, we would like to share this with all of you. Come to think of it, apart from american movies, this possibly could be the first non-american movie to be shown on IMAX. I may be wrong. So, bollywood is after all big. Of course, EROS entertainment has done a lot to get this movie. The credit also goes to them, and of course Subhashji for making this movie with Rahman.

Definitely, I thank all those who came to the auditoirum and had so much faith in us. The Story: It was a total chaos in the lobby. We had 600 people in the lobby waiting for tickets for the 400 seating IMAX theatre. So, we had to send back 200 people (I am good at Maths, :-) ). So, we are re-screening TAAL on IMAX again next tuesday, Aug 31st 7:00 p.m. at IMAX in downtown Indianapolis.

Please watch TV Asia-for the AVS segment. Raju Sethi of AVS was here to shoot and get first hand reactions from the audience. Each and every person, even those who sneaked in without paying, enjoyed the experience (yeh tho sabhi jagaah par hoti hai, kya kare). For everyone, this was more of a community gathering. The problem now we face is that they all want to see each and every movie on IMAX and not on the regular screen. We had people from more than 200 miles away, from towns like Columbus-OH, Louisville-KY, Memphis-TN and Milwaukee. We had to turn away people who even came all the way from louisville (100 odd miles).

The bottom line-This was one heck of a experience. For those of you who were skeptical, watch any movie on IMAX when you get a chance. This is a new way of watching movies, and I am glad that we started this. Believe me, in the next 2-3 months, all major cities will be soon starting to screen Indian movies on IMAX. Get your tickets much in advance.

Now about the experience: Since the movie was in scope, it filled 60% of the screen. It was still huge, and watching Aish and Akshaye was (in bumbaiya lingo) Total Paisa Vasool. As a matter of fact this is the first time in my years of business that most of the customers were saying we should have charged $10 or even as high as $12. They were all ready to pay even $12 for this service. The seats are stadium style, the sound comes from everywhere, and the images are cool. The dances were a delight to watch. The sound was the best. In short, all superlatives ONLY.

This tuesday, we are screening the movie with DTS surround, which means the movie will be even better to watch. From what I understand, even Subhashji was eager to find out how this turned out, and I am sure that he will be very happy when he comes to know of the response. Kudos to him for giving us this chance.

To add some spice, as of now, we have booked Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam also, and have tentativeley set the date for Tuesday Sept 7th for screening on IMAX. I would appreciate if you can give us some choices of movies that might be worthwhile playing on IMAX (The rent is steep, and hence we cannot show all movies. Only those which we feel can attract a full hosue is worth it). I have Kuch Kuch, Dilwaale, Dil to pagal hai, Dil Se, and Of course SHOLAY. Let us see what all movies we come up with.

Once again, thank you for your comments. Dr.Raman.

In short, don't just watch a movie, expereince it, on IMAX.

nraman@iupui.edu

Congratulations . What I would suggest that since most South Asians are on email you get their email address and inform them of upcoming movies say a month in advance and also on Ramli and web sites .

That way you will have to screen only movies which have tickets sold out and not have to make a loss . DDLJ I think would run and run on Imax ! Imax cinemas are in most parts of the world including London , Bradford , Europe etc..Mo

Dear Netters,

TAAL has already created records in the first week of its release. And now another one will be set with the screening of TAAL on an IMAX screen for the first time in the world.

Contrary to all rumours (from people who have never even watched a 35mm movie on IMAX) on the net about clipping, blurring, and etc of the movie, a regular 35mm movie looks regular on the IMAX screen. I have watched Hollywood movies on IMAX and they look beautiful with the huge screen, big sound, and luxurious seat. The regular 35-mm prints can only be shown on a flat screen IMAX and not in the Dome IMAX.

There is no need for special projectors for screening the 35mm movies on IMAX. the regular projectros are being used for this purpose. i watched the trailor of TAAL on the IMAX screen and it looked awesome. I am hoping that everyone in the audience will enjoy the movie on this GIGANTIC SCREEN. We hope that the audience will enjoy this experience, and wait for other spectacular movies to be screened on IMAX.

. The theater has astounded visitors with a 6 story tall by 80-foot wide screen and a six-channel digital sound system (approximately 10,000 watts of sound).

The vast auditorium gives viewers a movie-going experience like no other. Patrons may choose from 409 luxury seats, each one placed to ensure that it is the best seat in the house. It has stadium seating with no obstructed views. Attending a movie at the IMAX will make you feel like you're in the movie, not just watching one. IMAX started screening Hollywood movies on the IMAX screen using the typical 35mm reels and it was an instant sucess. We expect this opening to go full house, and hope to open shows regularly in IMAX screens.

Surely, A.R.Rahman's music will be a delight to hear on this huge system. This is the way a movie should be watched and experienced. TAAL plays on IMAX-Indianapolis on Tuesday 7:00 p.m. sharp. Come early to get your seats ($8/person). For more details visit www.shyaam.com or www.inwhiteriver.com.

It's a treat to ears and eyes. AR RAHMAAN is the MAN !

As you all know the music is excellent. songs blend extremely well in the story.one after another. enjoy them. Cinematography - kabir lal. choreography ghai regular saroj khan and ghai new comer shimak davar.

On the acting front absolutely nothing to complaint.Ash adds another peacock feather after HDDCS ! She has less dialogues and only few of then hard. ghai has cleverly covered Aish's weakness( voice).Akshay K has a excellent. His dialogue delivery is very good and get his puch and timinng correctly. Anil K has out going personality which he plays with at ease. He is THE ramta jogi. Subhash ghai ji .. what should i say. do i say he need to have better story/screenplay next time? no , i don't care.

Till there is rahmaan in full form, kavita K at her peak, aishwarya, akshay, anil, sukhvinder, hariharan and of course the 'harmony' ( chorus) girls with rahmaan's orchestra are there who cares !

corporate sponsers : coke ( although we see pepsi, mirinda too), MTV, kenstar, BPL, filmfare, manikchand gutkha etc etc Taal is running at Marietta Star cinema in atlanta(770-303-0258)..Gulab

excerpt from the movie review section of rediff.com

There are 12 songs in the film, all shot well. The background score, over which Rahman mulled so hard that he delayed the release, is pretty good too. Here, Rahman relies on jazz and some Western classical to bolster his tunes. And these meld well with the Indian music.

Hariharan has done a beautiful job in singing Mere samne tu, a poignant number about a beaten but still hopeful lover. It is undoubtedly the best song in the film. The choreography, as we mentioned, is excellent too..Sharmila Taliculam

On Aug 24 at White River State Park ( ? which state) . the screen is six storeys tall 40ft by 80ft and six channles of digital sound . ARR's music in this one although I much prefer Anu Malik or Ismail Darbar . Apparently Indian music doesnt have the intervals like Western music and since ARR has had Western training his music doesnt have the full range of normal Indian music . Each frame on Imax is ten times the size of 35mm - although since it hasnt been shot in Imax Taal will probably be quite blurred .

The bits I liked about the movie were Ash teaching Yoga to Akshay . She does it in real life herself and has the flexible spine to be good at it . It was only a five minute sequence and could well have been expanded to 15 or 20 minutes with a more detailed explanation of each posture. This is really what Bollywood should be doing much more of , educating about South Asian culture . This movie will certainly make yoga more popular all over the world .

The song before the interval where Anil has stolen a folk tune and made a 'remix' and turned into a western dance aerobicise is also very good . Indian dance aerobicise seems a lot more fun than the more gymnastic western one .

Ramta Jogee is a truly great song , full of deep emotion and danced very well by Anil and Ash . The sequence of lovers copying each others gestures has been taken out of the Kama Sutra - a great book , well the first chapter anyway written 2,000 years ago .

The Chamba valley has been beautifully picturized in the first half and that alone is worth the ticket price , its the kind of forested mountains , deep valleys and fast flowing rivers that the fighting in Kashmir ( and Dagestan) has shifted to after the battle on the rocky barren peaks of Kargil and those interested in current affairs will understand a lot of what is happening better if they see this movie .

The cabaret show in the Toronto skydrome with all the artistes on fire is good too.

ARR music they say grows on you but it can take an infinite amount of time ! Apart from Ramta Jogee and that other song danced by the hot hill girls in wet salwar kameez will any of the tunes become as popular as those of Pardes ( I love my India , kisi tasveer ) and Khalnayak (choli ke peeche , aaja sanam aaja ) ? I much prefer the unstructured varying beat traditional South Asian music but ARR did give very good music for Daud and Rangeela .

Dialog is not quite as memorable as most movies where the Urdu writers always give about 40 or 50 statements of mind blowing wisdom in each movie , the only that sticks in the mind is when Anil is run down by a golf cart by Ash and he says ' Kushnaseeb hai wo ashiq jo apini mohabbat ke haton mara gaya '- 'Fortunate is that man who gets killed by his true love !'.

The picturization of the Chamba valley is truly great BUT the camermen must remember that when we look at a photograph we like to take time over it , so some of the beautiful shots of the village nestled in the valley thousands of feet below when the hero and heroine fall over the cliff should have been frozen for a little while to give the eye time to take it in . Fast camera movements can just produce dizziness .

Have a look at the multi million dollar gold/diamond necklace that Ash wears in the final scene . These props are what makes Bolly movies so good . Curiously the Pakistanis dont seem to have them although they can be rented to show the best that the country has to offer .

It would help if the credits were shown at the beginning of the movie as well instead of just at the end when most people are walking away . That way the producers would get a lot more sponsors from jewellers , hotels , dress shops etc. . The coke bit has been carried too far -at one point Anil even says the show has been sponsored by Coke ! Glad there is no smoking in this movie.

Leave the language Urdu . In this movie there are a lot of Hindi words -sangarsh instead of jung and upasthith instead of mojood . Urdu is a more versatile language and there can be great word play etc. For eg 'Jai Hind' shown on Zee had great dialog . When the villain grabs the heroine and she tells him to let her go he say ' Hath may jab aye noor , to kyun use jane de hazoor ? ' OK it may raise a groan but its still fun ! . Definitely going to get that DVD . A great dance by Manisha while the other heroine is made to stand on a bed of nails by the militants .

Ash must like Madhuri and Raveena learn to flirt and make more eye contact with the audience and with the male leads , for example that rain dance when she writhing sensouly on the grass a smile at the male members in the audience.. ..Mo

A very watchable movie. Except for the routine "triangular, richboy, poorgirl" plot, the movie has everything going for it. The star cast are in top form. Music, including the background score, is awesome. Photography is captivating. Choreography (which includes around 11 songs) is appealing and in fact is good enough to draw repeat audiences. Also, the weakness of the plot is covered up by the "treatment" and the way it is presented.

There is hardly any "noise" factor in the movie. No shrill dialogues, loud emotions or cacophonous comedy track. The characters have been nicely worked out in the script and all of them have some negative shades in their character, which brings the odd turns in the plot. The climax almost seemed to get chaotic but retrieves it's balance in time to work its way to a ending without the usual maraamari .

AishwaryaRai is excellent. She is throughout the movie,. Unlike the other two main characters, her character goes through different changes, from the village girl to a music star. Aish enacts all of it with grace and natural ease. Here is a rare and good combination of Beauty, acting prowness and Dancing skills. Add to that a seemingly smart attitude in picking up meaty roles. AkshayKhanna, a talented actor among the younger lot of Bollywood, is good enough as a besotted lover who is confident of regaining his love.

Anilkapoor is fantastic. He is the scene stealer in the second half of the movie. He gets the best dialogues (whereas the other two characters are more tonguetied) but makes a damn good job of it, both during his negative and positive moments. For instance, look out for the scenes where he lists out his commandments for success and contrast it with his climax scene.

The support cast, including AlokNath, MitaVashist, AmrishPuri are fairly good.

But, the real star of the movie is ARRahman. When i heard the songs for the first time on tape, except for a couple of songs, the rest sounded odd. Then, it grew on gradually after more listening. But after seeing the movie, the music makes sense and definitely it sounds good and hummable. Also, Rahman has given a imaginative Background score. Unlike the standard Bollywood fare, it doesn't drown the dialogues or attempt to give any cue to the audience.

Kabirlal's photography is another highlight. Not to forget the choroegraphy of Davar, Saroj and Ahmed Khan.

Among the songs, even though all were good, Nahi Samney and Ramta Jogi were nicely picturised and sung. Surprisingly, AlokNath gets two songs .

This is one of the better movies of SubhashGhai. Infinitely better than CholikeyPechey Khalnayak ; This has also bettered Pardes, Ghai's last movie., which was good in parts but suffered from poor climax, editing and music .

In short, Taal is more of a Smartly Packaged Product from the Ghai stable which is worth a visit to the theatre..cheers Raj
