I went into the movie theatre to watch a Hindi movie after quite some
time, hoping only for a story which was coherent and logical. With such
meager standards( not for Hindi films though) at stake, I came out of the
movie theatre saying‹ ŒPaisa vasool ho gaya¹.
Contrary to many other Hindi movies it got better in the second half
where the songs had become infrequent enough so as to allow, some
stretches of dialogue to go by without seeming like commercial breaks.
Unfortunately, the template on which Hindi Filmmakers have to operate,
one of multiple song and dance sequences, melodrama(in all its upswings
and downswings) and a happy ending can allow only a particular kind of
movie, that has to build up like a crescendo before it ends.
But one can see change, although minute; one can see the director
trying to change certain stereotypes, although he lets other ones just
be. One sees the hero, Raj( Salman Khan) unabashedly crying, when he
misses his girl Annie(Manisha Koirala); the father of the girl,
Joseph(Nana Patekar), though from a former generation, openly speak of his
affection and love for his wife(Seema Biswas); one can see superb casting
( an almost unknown art form in Hindi films) in the form of the young
Annie(Priya Parulekar) who plays the young girl's part with some
restraint. The director has also stayed away from the Hindu- Christian
difference, besides a tiny reference(which could have consumed an hour
more in this already long film)
It is definitely a pleasure to see the character of Joseph's mother,
Mariamma (played by Helen in a comeback after many years).
This film almost starts where Gulzar's ŒKoshish¹ ends; where one can
see the pressure on the child of a couple, who are both mute and deaf,
isolated from the rest of the unfriendly world, where their child ends up
becoming not only their support, but also their voice, as this film
states. She lives her life, always aware of this tension. This sense of
being different is heightened, when the child's grandma teaches her to
cherish her own voice, the sounds of the waves and the sea-shells, and the
music that emanates from a piano, owned by the family. As the girl faces
the loss of the grandmother, a younger brother, mother's heart attack and
her father's occupation threatened by an accident at work, her sense of
responsibility heightens. She likes music, wants to sing in celebration
of life, never forgetting the legacy that her grandmother has left behind,
and falls in love with a man who composes music, all of which threaten the
bond with her parents, and the sense of guilt she experiences. One sees
the hurt on the mother's face when after a prolonged mourning she is
reminded of her lost son, by the joy that music brings to her daughter's
face, and can't let go of her anger when the daughter can't sense it.Annie
deserves an independent life as she is reminded by a family friend, Willie
(Raghuvir Yadav), who remains faithful till the very end. One can see the
pangs of pain experienced by her father when she tries to individuate,
especially, when the man she loves comes into her life, reminding him of
her separate identity.
Manisha delivers a somewhat complex female character( for a change!)
with charm and some texture.. But to the credit of Sanjay
Leela Bhansali, I came out of the theatre having felt that not only that I
wasn't bored, but had some hope left for Hindi commercial cinema.
Sridevi is one of the few actresses that can carry a film with
her screen presence. The film was made with her in mind and without her
the film would probably not be made. Her character , a lawyer who enlists
the help of 5 prisoners to get justice her own way, is the central figure
in a film with many characters. Sridevi gives an excellent performance.
She has the 'eye of the tiger' look and her confrontation scenes with
Danny are very good. The film has a good supporting cast but it is too
difficult to fully develop all the characters as there are many. Sudesh
Berry, Mohnish Behl and Harish manage to stand out but get lost in the crowd.
Danny is good as the villain. Shahrukh Khan does a good job in an extended
special appearance. He manages to make an impact with a small role.
Action director Ram Shetty does a good job in his first directorial
venture. However the script writers go off-track from the basic narrative
with many flashbacks of the different characters and their love interests
that slow down the pace of the film. The action scenes are nicely handled
as well as the dance choreography, especially the 'de taali' number. This
film is a must-see for Sridevi fans and those who like Shahrukh Khan won't
be disappointed.

Let's Get one thing straight here boyz. In the entire history of Bollywood's "Dishum Dishum" style roof-jumping, triple back flipping, and total BUKWAS BS action scenes, there is ONLY ONE TRULY GREAT FIGHTER, and that man is non other than the KHILADI KING himself AKSHAY! See, in an industry where fight scenes are comedy, and most are the same old fruit cart flipping corny and FAKE routine, Akki hits em hard with actual fighting moves!! Is he the Jackie Chan of India? He's the closest we have ever gotten. Besides, it is entertaining sequences we want to see, which is the Ultimate reason Akshay Kumar is the ALL-TIME BEST!! (PS-Akshay Kumar and Razor Ramon defeated 1-2-3 Kid and Tatanka during this past Springs WWF tour of India, which is proof that Akki has RAW talent. This is where Akki got the Idea for him vs.Undertaker in Khiladio Ka Khiladi)
I recently watched the very much hyped Prem Granth and Khiladiyon Ka
: Khiladi. Prem Granth was good, but not all that.... The songs and
: Madhuri's performance were really the only good things about it.
: Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi was a total waste of time. I honestly don't
: understand how this film was a hit. Akshay is one of the most annoying
: "actors" (if you can even call him that) I've seen. He has the stupidest
: voice of all time.
: A friend of mine somehow convinced me to go watch Chaahat in the
: cinema. I don't know how I actually gave in, because I felt that I had
: already wasted my money recently on the other two films. To my surprise,
: it was a great film. After watching it, I really must take my hat off to
: Shah Rukh Khan. Yes, it's true that he overdid it in Ram Jaane and
: English Babu Desi Mem, but wow, is this guy ever talented. Chaahat has
: only further proven that Shah Rukh can give beautiful performances when
: he wants to. This was undoubtedly his best performance since Dilwale
: Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Shah Rukh's street-musician character is the heart
: and soul of the film. In addition, the now-famous Shah Rukh-Anupam Kher
: jori is a treat to watch, with some very touching father-son scenes.
The film was very mixed. Ikram is right about the songs - they were a hoot, Govinda was very funny and Shilpa looked wonderful. I also enjoyed the underlying premise of Govinda's character. He is a police inspector who wants to avoid any risk or danger, while bragging about his bravery and prowess. Yet in trying to avoid these dangers he inadvertantly makes spectacular arrests. This first part is good and funny. But as the subplot involving Aditya starts to take over, and the violence becomes serious, the film flames into the toilet. This happens around the interval, and the whole second half is a waste. Significantly, the songs and dances disappear in the second half, too. Gulshan plays an absurdly over the top campy, cat-loving murderer, which is ultimately ridiculous, but kind of luridly funny in a way. Unlike, say, Naseeruddin in HIMMAT, who is absurd and awful. Strange, Shilpa looked good in that movie, too.
So all in all, the technical production of the movie and the good performances (for me, Shah Rukh Khan!) make the movie worth watching. Even if Trimurti doesn't live up to your expectations, I think it's definitely worth watching once, and the cinema is the best way to enjoy it the most. If you've already seen Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (which I'm sure you have!), I think that Trimurti is the only other movie playing right now that is worth-watching (I didn't like AHAT too much)! The response of the people on the whole, so far, has been good. A LOT of people have seen Trimurti at the cinema, and there was a positive response from the audience at the show that I went to (clapping during intermission and at the end). So to wrap up, I think that, due to the Mukta Arts banner and Shah Rukh's popularity, Trimurti should easily become a hit, if not a super-hit.
You've gotta be JoKING!! How can u enjoy this movie?? Me and My friends went 2 c Trimurti instead of AKHAKT!! This movie is a joke!! Me and my friends cried more than Jackie! We thoght about the proper Saja for Ghai and M. Anand. There is only one saja for them.... Making them watch the movie.
If you watch this movie on video, you'll be missing half the
movie! This is one of those few movies that can only be enjoyed fully on
the big screen. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge is an excellent film and it
is worth watching in the cinema, guaranteed. Shah Rukh once again proves
that he is the most talented actor in Bombay today (as well as a damn
good dancer, too!)
the main purpose of most movies is ENTERTAINMENT. DDLJ is
entertainment from start to finish.
Saw this moive tonite. Glad to say that Amir Khan has taken over where
Amitabh left i.e at no 1 place.surely a James Dean of Indian cinema.
Manisha K is bound to reach Meena Kumari's slot . a place reserveed for
a Malika . Only thing disappointing was 'fraud' Anu Malick's music. Least
spoken the better.
Amir has been the oldest of the new generation Khans. And he has been the
the most consistent and biggest darling of the Indian Cinema . People like
him do India proud. Manisha on the other hand is doing what most of the
Indian actress failed to do . That is to stop thinking below the belt .
Bless these talented artists. ......... Anwar

I just saw Akele Hum Akele Tum.....I wasn't too impressed. I was really
bored at times and just wanted to leave. The movie was much like Mahesh
Bhatt's "Kaash" with Jackie Shroff and Dimple. The performances in AHAT
were not that good, except that of the little boy.
I thought Mansoor Khan was going to make a film about the role of the
repressed housewife, and how her wishes and dreams of a career would come
to play. But in the movie, Manisha is somehow made out to be a
villainess. Every problem that Aamir faces is made to be a consequence of
Manisha's actions . Everyone in the the theater, including me, hated her
for deserting that little boy. When the boy visits Manisha for the first
time after 2 years, and Aamir later on asks the boy what they talked
about, the boy replies, "Meine mummy ko bola app duniya ke sabse achi
mummy hai", everyone in the theater laughed.
The songs were okay, but that song with Anu Malik trying to sing in
English made me laugh, even though it was supposed to be a sad number.
Aamir looked too young to play the father of a 7 year old boy..they looked
more like brothers. Manisha, IMO, only looks pretty when she's crying.
Otherwise she has way too much make up on for the rest of the film (I know
that she was supposed to be portraying an Indian starlet, but in one scene
her face looked like a big purple grape)
The only thing I really enjoyed during the movie were the takes on
Nadeem-Shravan and Gulshan Kumar...I was cracking up! Half of the movie
was Rangeela-ish, going inside the Bollywood film industry.
A lot of people were crying over the movie, but I didn't really find
anything to cry about...everything seemed so contrived and predictable. I
was only crying over my $7.
And what about Ram-jaane ? It pulled crowds in first week because of SRK's popularity after DDLJ, but truth was out soon, and the movie is limping to the completion of third week. Not doing well in **any** place !!
>>Angrakshak, released on Friday, starring Sunny Deol and Pooja Bhatt, failed at >>create a flutter at the box-office inspite of a >>few catchy numbers. Tinna Khanna and Sunny Deol . Film shot in the
hilly districts of Kashmir . Sunny Deol plays the poor boy.
From rec.movies
-Barsaat - winner of worst film in Indian film making history. Would appreciate the directors name, wish to challenge him to a dual to the death for wasting 2.5 hours of my life.
Time Magnetics (India) Limited proudly present their latest venture, GOVINDA in and as GAMBLER. Gambler co-stars Aditya Panscholi, Shilpa Shetty, Raj Babbar, Saeed Jaffrey, and Gulshan Grover. Produced by Dhirijlal Shah, directed by Dayal Nihlani, and music by the current top music director ANU MALIK. GAMBLER has been delayed for practically one whole year now, and it is scheduled for release December 8, 1995. It will be nice now to see how a stale GOVINDA project will stand against AKELE HUM AKELE TUM and RAM-JAANE, releasing today December 1!

Happy New Year to everyone, and on that note here is a post on some of the major films of 1995 and some to expect in 1996. Enjoy!
First I'll mention the major hits of 1995(in no particular order):
1.) KARAN-ARJUN (Director: Rakesh Roshan) 2.) BOMBAY (Director: Mani Ratnam) 3.) SABSE BADA KHILADI (Director: Umesh Mehra?) 4.) COOLIE NO. 1(Director: DAVID DHAWAN) 5.) RAJA (Director: Indra Kumar) 6.) RANGEELA (Director: Ram Gopal Verma) 7.) DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYANGE (Director: Aditya Chopra) 8.) HUM AAP KE HAN KAUN (Director: Sooraj Bartajya)-released in 1994, but played through most of 1995 in theatres Next I'll recap some of the major flops of the year, again they are in no particular order: 1.) MAJHDAAR (Director: Eesmayal Shroff?) 2.) SAUDA (Director:?) 3.) SAAJAN KI BAAHON MEIN (Director: ?) 4.) PREM (Director: Satish Kaushik) 5.) CRIMINAL (Director: Mahesh Bhatt) 6.) HULCHUL (Director: Anees Bazmee?) 7.) VEERGATI (Director: K. K. Singh) 8.) RAM SHASTRA (Director: Sanjay Gupta) 9.) ANGRAKSHAK (Director: Ravi Raja?)
Some films which did recover costs but were not real big
hits were: HAATHKADI, NAAJAYAZ, ANDOLAN, RAVAN-RAAJ, HUM DONO,
JALLAD, YAARANA, BARSAAT, and RAM-JAANE. There were not many
surprise hits in 1995, although 2 Mithun-starrers (Raavan-Raaj and
Jallad) were classified as major hits due to low budget costs
and high returns. It was true like most years that the audience
does not appreciate mediocre films made with little effort in
script or storyline, some examples were most DHARMENDRA films in
1995. Not one of his many films this year were classified as
hits, or even close to being hits. Maybe it's time for
Gharam-Dharam to become choosy and start reading some good
scripts instead of signing some of the trash he has had in the
last few years.
It is too early to tell how most of the films released
in December such as GAMBLER, TRIMURTI, and HAQEEQAT have done.
Here is a list of films to expect in the first half of 1996.

Brilliant comedy film .You have to watch it more than once to get all the jokes. Ravishing Raveena Tandon in a glamorous role as the head of a gang of girls- the bicycle chain gang ! Kaider Khan plays the god who loses the 'Book of the Future' and is desperate to get it back before humans find it and become just too wise. Excellent dialogue and dances . Indian cinema at its best .
Ritu Shivpuri , Jeetendra and Dharmendra. Four villains one played by 'Duryodahan' from the serial Mahabarat live lives to be envied. Many dances with scantily clad females for those who like that sort of thing. 'Ishq ki barsaat' is beautifully choreographed. Bashir's dialogue is outstanding. A must see film.
