Tamana

It is a beautiful movie. I saw it over the weekend and I was amazed by the efforts that had been put inot it. There were as usual some unwanted overacting...i don't suppose these could have been avoided. Paresh Rawal as the hijra was convinving...but towards the end his character got a bit annoying in terms of how it was portrayed. Through and through it was Pooja's film. I think this is one of the bolder and braver films made in recent Bollywood history. Watch it, it is really worth it if you are aware of and care about the issue.. Mili

Lahoo Ke Do Rang

If you're bored at home and have a copy if Lahoo Ke Do Rang, SLEEP! Don't even try watching this film because it's Akshay Kumar's worst. Lahoo Ke Do Rang has a a typical Bollywood plot- kill someone for money but at the end don't kill them and be good. Nasseriudan Shah played a OK role but made himself look stupid mainly because he was an honest guy through out the film. Karishma was HOT as usual and had nothing to do with the movie. The editing and layout of the film is really poor. Reminds me of Akshay's other flops like Zakmhi DIl and Zaalim.
I give it 1 out out four stars. Why the one? cuz there is this one really catchy Akshay song.

Salma Pe dil Aageya

Song picturisation is perfect . the best Bollywood has ever done. Salma pe dil aa gya is out of this world . Dhol bajao goriyo is very good too as are all the others. Sadiqa's costumes are fabulous . It is a bit of a remake of Heer Ranjha ( with Priya and Raj Kumar- the all time classic and best movie ever made) but in a Pathan setting.
Somebody mentioned that there are few if any Pathans in it , maybe because they are not very prominent in the acting field , but the Pathan culture is well shown.
It may not be a big hit in North India because of some mistakes the producers have made. The third person in the triangle should not be a cousin -otherwise Roja would not have been a big hit . The cutting of a lover's name on the hand should have ben censored and hopefully nose rings will soon go out of fashion. Lata's voice does not match the young actresses and she should stop doing those kind of songs . Comedy breaks are essential in a long movie to relieve the tension and a comedy writer like Kader Khan is sorely missed. Overall a movie worth seeing for its songs and photography of the desert...Mo

Chote Sarkar

A great comedy/action musical showing that Govinda is top of the class in this field . Superb sexy dances by sultry Shilpa -Sulakha wali is the best. The Qawalli by mad people is very good too.
Fights are very well done.Scenes of being trussed up and beaten by a female police inspector will be a big hit with bondage fans. If Zee could use the 888 number on teletext and put in subtitles , so those who dont want them can switch them off ,it will increase its audience greatly....Mo

Hero No. 1

Tho' I would put Hero No. 1 in the category of mind-blowing also... DD, Chi-chi and KK are amazing in this movie... Govinda's relationship with his dad(Kader Khan) is really nicely brought out. One of the highlights. Govinda, himself, was amazing { Hey, AkhlaQ, how about sending me the application form for membership :)}. Besides his other talents, the dude is such a genuine mimic... The way he sings the stanza of 'jo tu hoti Dimple Kapadia, hum bhi toh Kaka hote' was amazing!! He even apes Dimple doing her crowning glory baal-saNwaarna routine... :) Is definitely a must-see for this year's movies..... , Ikram

Judaai

Judaai is is all respects a perfect Hindi commercial film. The film has a message-based story, great music, dancing, comedy and drama to make it an amazing entertainer. The viewer (this one at least) is left glued to the seat for every minute of both the meaningful and the mindlessness in this film, and not once does one check their watch for the time or run out for a stroll to the washroom. Of course, this praise does not mean that every single person on the face of this planet will enjoy Judaai. However, based on this reviewer's criteria for a perfect Hindi film, this film is it. (Mind you, my choices of perfect Indian cinema does not always coincide with box office successes.)

For the reader's benefit let me list the things that I thoroughly enjoyed about Judaai, and let you decide whether you want to see the film and/or agree with my viewpoints: 1) The central them of Judaai is GREED, and the story is 'Indianized' perfectly by the script writer from the Hollywood blockbuster 'Indecent Proposal'. In this Hindi version, our central character is a naive mother and wife (Sridevi) who loves her family but far more than these human relationships she values money. The story progresses to reveal to Kajal (Sridevi) that money can never be a substitute for love and companionship in this world. 2) Performances by each and every actor in the film are very good, especially Sridevi, who once again adds a memorable role to her long list of classic portrayals. The reason for the good acting is not simply the actors' hard work but great script writing and great character development for each and every major player in the film.

The main characters are all grey, and more true to life than the black and white cutouts one is accustomed to seeing in most Hindi films. Kajal is motivated by her father's inadequate rearing skills to value money as the be-all-and-end-all in life. Despite repeated refusal from her husband and mother, she forces him (very realistically) to marry again so she can earn Rs. 2 crore from his second wife.

Anil Kapoor's character, Kajal's husband, loves his wife too much and though this type of man rarely exists in the real world, it is a great character. The audience is shown the dangers of loving too much and letting others rule your life (more representative of a woman's role in Indian society). Jhanvi Sahni (Urmila) is a rich but parentless child who learns the difference between buying people and earning love in the world. She is not evil (in fact far from it) but she definitely does not recognize the limits of socieatal dos and donts. You cannot despise any of these characters in the film. Sure, in the interval I heard eveyone call Sridevi 'stupid' a million times, but it is more anger at the individual's lack of 'intelligence' and common sense. We know why Kajal loves money so much (her father), so we cannot bame here directly for the her greed.

3) The audience is permitted to slowly intake the high level of drama in the film through perfectly timed breaks of comedy and music. The music though not as great as say Khamoshi: The Musical, but is still very good, and the song picturisations are mind-blowing. 'Judaai, Judaai' is filched again from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, but the video is remniscent of a Yash Chopra film and we forgive the music directors' plagiarism. 'Oee Baba Oee Baba' and ' Mujeh Pyar Hua' are also brilliantly shot outdoor dances (the former on Las Vegas streets). Great comedy sequences are also provided by Johnny Lever, Paresh Rawal and Kader Khan to give some respite from the drama and to prevent the proceedings from getting too heavy on the audience. (The Indian masses do not appreciate being too depressed by a film.) 4) Technically, the film is also brilliant. Cinematography by Harmeet Singh is beautiful and locations are pircturesque. Dance movements by Saroj Khan are fresh for a change (witness 'Mujeh Pyar Hua' and 'Ooee Baba'). And of course, the director Raj Kanwar after superhits such as Deewana, Laadla and Jeet, once again demonstrates his brilliant grasp over the commercial Hindi film medium. One might feel I am overemphasizing the brilliance of Judaai (I feel that way about Shakespeare also). Oh well, to each his own. Here is hoping that Judaai is a super-success, and more great masala movies along the lines of Judaai in the near future. ...ali@indolink.com

Judaii - a true masterpiece . No negative roles and no fights with great songs , shadi ka kadwa ladu is the best , so it is destined to be a great hit like HAHK. It is good that Hindi movies have stopped killing off the third one in the triangle.
Sridevi is one woman who gets prettier as she gets older . Urmilla and Anil Kapoor are good too. Great comedy acting by the very talented , one who writes many of the superb dialogues , India's favourite Afghan - Kader Khan . A must see, it will keep you entranced for all 3 hours....Mo

I was impressed by the movie as well.. Though I disagree that the best part of the movie was johnny lever.. Though he was alot more tolerable then he was in Raja Hindustani he was the worst part of the movie. PAresh RAwal and Kadar Khan were good. Though, the best part of the movie was Sri DEvi. She was excellent as the nagging wife who portrayed the charecter really well.. of loving her husband but loving money even more..

Next to Sri Devi Urmila was nothing.. though I think I need to see the movie again. .as I Am sure she deserves more credit then I am giving her. A great movie.. which will mostly make you laugh though there are some scenes which brought tears to my eyes....Meenakshi

Uf Ye Mohabat

Quite an enjoyable movie. Twinkle looks very pretty , probably much more than she is in real life. It is of course the usual romantic story with an unwilling rich father who knows 'middle class mentality !'.

This is one movie having seen on Zee , one would like to watch on the big screen. The culture and beauty of Sikkim is shown very well -although one wonders if the Chinese lion dance is really part of the local scene. Other movies have tried to protray different parts of India but none I think in this kind of loving detail of the mountains , the beautiful buildings and local dances.

The final scene with Twinkle in a hand pulled rickshaw racing to catch the train is filmed very well indeed. Hopefully this movie will be a hit and lead to showing of more beauty spots and the rich local culture of different parts of the subcontinent....Mo

Kamasutra

For all who have not yet seen KamaSutra, weeellll, too bad. You are definitelly missing a great movie. Though this movie will not be shown in its entirety in India, owing to the omnipotent censors, hopefully what will survive will definitely reveal Mira Nair's prowess. The music is just superb. Combine that will scintillating performances and period dresses and locales, this is undoubtedly one of the best movies of the year.

Revolving around a princess and her servant friend, who always gets the princess' leftovers. Well the friend decides to get back at her mistress by seducing her husband the night before the wedding. The scenes portrayed will definitely not get past the censors in India. The remainder of the story deals with the friend's plight and life afte being banished from the royal palace. She becomes the king's courtesan, and takes on a secret lover. The discovery of the lover by the king leads to his execution. The climactic scene should be seen rather than told. Be sure to see the movie. Discussions on the portrayal of the chapters of Kamasutra should be interesting....Premlal

This is an amazing new film that uses eroticism from the classical Indian tradition to expand our consciousness about the unexplored realities of men, women, sex, & love. It is light-years beyond the worn-out, superficial, stereotyped sex roles that Bollywood always shows. After you see "Kama Sutra" you will never look at Indian films the same way again. India in its post-colonial phase has gotten so far away from the native spirit that created the Kama Sutra. Sexuality is so repressed now, so twisted, especially in entertainment. All direct physical contact is censored in movies in India, even kissing, and sexuality emerges instead in scenes of rape, of violence against women. Mira Nair wanted to make a film that countered the sickness and perversity where women were concerned on the Indian screen. The Sufi songs always contained double entendres about the Lover and the Divine being one and the same. They said that sex was holy. The Kama Sutra deals very matter-of-factly with the different kinds of sex and love that exist. It says that sex without love is completely natural, but not to get disappointed when the act itself is not exalted. However, if practiced with the skills of the Kama Sutra, sex with love with someone with whom you want a more complete union, can be holy, transcendent, divine.....Kathe Marge

Kama Sutra starts off well with pretty shots of two children swimming, and one waits eagerly but is likely to be disappointed. The plot is predictable, and except for the 16th-century Indian setting, the movie is conventional. You won't even pick up any good sex tips, unless you wish to entertain your lover with phrases like 'Twining of the Creeper'.

I enjoyed the 'Indianness' (quotes intentional) of the film -- all those lovely colours and outfits and jewellery, the glorious tropical sun, the music, wonderful Rajasthani forts, and acres of luscious brown skin. But just showing beautiful men and women in beautiful locales does not make a good film. Plot, character development & dialogue are unfortunate necessities. The plot was thin and derived. And the dialogue: I can't remember when I've heard such bad lines. I would have enjoyed the movie more if it had been in Hindi -- melodramatic lines like 'She is my lotus woman' somehow sound better in Hindi or Urdu :-) Occasionally the characters came out with amazingly modern ideas like 'I don't sculpt by committee', or wonderful little analyses of their own feelings that sounded like they'd just come from their psychotherapists. The rest of the time it was cliched one-liners like "You are your father's property, and then you become your husband's".

The sex scenes left me cold, probably because any possible mood buildup had been destroyed by the platitudes pouring out of the actor's mouths. Like much of the movie, they were beautiful (rose petals, torchlight, jewellery etc.) but not erotic. About halfway through the movie I got bored and was wondering how many more monotonous cycles of sex/talk/sex there were to go, but the Shah's appearance livened things up. (Isn't that a sad commentary on a film, that war is more interesting than sex? :-)) Mira Nair said in an interview that she had not thought about showing male or female nudity specifically, that 'you see what I want you to see'. A rather disingenuous statement, since there is plenty of female nudity, full frontal and all, but nary a glimpse of the male equivalent. Surely an articulate woman director is not as naive as to think it's a non-issue? Judging from the interviews, her 'vision' was far more complex than she was able to portray in the film. She talked of 'radical ideas in historical literature', but women using their bodies for power is hardly radical, and the principles of how to please a man are explored regularly in women's magazines today. She sneers at Bollywood, but the film had lots of classic Hindi-movie bits, like loss of virginity being pointedly demonstrated by large bloodstains on the sheets, or a woman dramatically wiping the tikka off her forehead when her husband dies. And a bizarre hair-cutting scene near the end, which is meant to be heavily significant but is merely bewildering. (Altogether, Sholay was better on the drama.)

Actors: Rekha and Naveen Andrews: thoroughly enjoyed themselves hamming it up. Rekha was stunning as always, and brought some dignity to the film. Sarita Chowdhary: had no role -- she was offscreen for a large chunk of the film, and the rest of the time she had to be either resentful or miserable. Indira Verma: clearly the star, but would have been better without having to spout those awful lines. Ramon Tikaram: played his part completely straightfaced, which made it hard to take him seriously. But all of them looked good.

Judwa

The movie had no point.. but I don't think it was supposed to have a point.. Its just a comedy through and through...from the romance to the fighting.. its all funny. Yeah the songs are not very good... but they fit in the movie.. and they are funny in the movie.. I have also found them catchy though the words make no sense.. As for Salman.. I thought he did a good job in this movie.. and yeah his clothes were not that great (but better than Khamoshi Red Shirt) but he still looked very good... regardless of his clothes.. Besides.. one Salman dressed pretty good.

All in all.. I think it is a movie you should see if you like comedies.. and it is not vulgar like the Govinda-David Dhanwan movies.. However, if you are not fond of comedies, especially ones with no storyline.. then don't bother seeing it. How is it doing box office wise??....Meenakshi

A good family entertainer . It was heartening to see so many young kids enjoying themselves. Salman Khan is very good in this double role. The best song was East or West India is the best which will bring a lump to everybody's throat. A movie worth seeing twice .

Aar Ya Paar

Enter a lonely heiress, Miss Veena. But, she is not a delicate rose. She is thorny, bitchy and portrayed almost naturally by newcomer Kamal Sidhu. Aar Ya Paar is not a love story. It is a tale about greed, lust, sex, betrayal and murder. Shekhar's lover Julia - a cabaret dancer (Ritu Shivpuri) plants the idea that Shekhar should marry Veena for her money so that all of their financial problems will be solves and all of their dreams can come true. The honeymoon is cut short when Shekhar becomes bored with his wife. His wandering eye catches the shy glance of Veena's secretary Anu portrayed by the sexy Deepa Sahi. When Veena becomes conveniently ill, the good husband takes advantage of the opportunity to make his move on Anu. Their torrid affair leads to a shared hatred for Veena whose petty jealousies and spiteful airs were becoming quite a nuisance and was interfering with their affair! Really! So, the shy suddenly seductive secretary hints at a will which gives loverboy Shekhar the idea of killing his wife. How he plans the dastardly deed, executes it, covers his tracks and creates an alibi so he can be at two places at once shows filmmaker Ketan Mehta at his finest.

Paresh Rawal reprises his role of the clever inspector from Ketan Mehta's Maya Memsaab as he tries to solve this crime of passion. With the wife out of the picture, Shekhar has dreams of money and no more clandestine meetings with Anu. Marrying Anu and sharing all the money was the next logical step, until he discovers that Anu is in love with another man, Anand (Mamek). That's when the story begins! Betrayal on top of betrayal and more twists than a pretzel go by at a dizzy

place. To give you a feel of the topsy-turvy plot, follow this, if you can! Shekhar wants Anu who wants Anand who wants... Now, if I told you that, I'd give away the whole story! It was interesting, when watching Aar Ya Paar, how the viewer's sympathies sways away from Shekhar towards Veena. Fore, after all the greed, betrayal and violence, she is the innocent victim. She was indeed a rose whose thorny exterior protected her from all social evils but one... love. All the money in the world could not give her what she desired. They say you can't buy love but for Veena, love came at an awful price. And so in Ketan Mehta's mini-series Aar Ya Paar, it is love and money which flirt with our dreams and ambitions for better and usually for the worst.

Yeshwant

Went to see Yeshwant on Friday. It is probably one of the best movies of recent times. Forget SRK and AK and all those pretty boys go and see Yeshwant it is money well spent.

The lead role is played by Nana Patekar whom I belive is the next highest paid actor after Amitabh. The movie is centered around Nana's character being that of a strict police inspector who does not like crime wheter it being bag snatching or smuggling. Madhoo plays the role of his wife who has to put up with Nana. In fact in the one scene when she vists him jail to complain about the rough time she is having from the baddies he says to her "Get lost go fight your own battles" this tells you the hardness and well sketched character that he has. The dialogue and its delivery is superb. The character of Mohan Jhosi, Atul Agnihotri and Shafi Inamdar are lost as the movie concentrates on Nana. In the movie Nana is framed for muder by Mohan Joshi and his side kicks and there are some quite movie coutroom scenes and most of the song/dialogue when Nana goes to jail Ek Machar Se. After the courts find him innocent Nana goes on to elimanate the criminals. I give this movie nine out of ten. Please go and see it. Thanks..Colin

Nana's wild holyman dance is worth watching !
